After reading the article what is your opinion on mobile devices in learning?

Do you think that mobile devices are valid educational tools, or just distractions?

Weebly

Our assignment was to create a personal portfolio using the web design site weebly.com

I liked that weebly was drag and drop. You could choose the template you wanted and drag it into the editing pane. You could also drag different elements onto your template, like paragraphs and pictures. All of this was done in the browser without having to download anything.

The only real challenge was the speed of the site. It is slow to begin with, and sometimes it slows down to to point of timing out.

I would give this site a 7. The features are great, the speed makes it a little cumbersome sometimes.

I would use this to create a personal portfolio of my school work. Also to make an online album of my classroom activities. Being montessori trained, it would be nice to have all my written down activities digitized and organized.

iMovie Commercial Assignment

My group and I were given the assignment of making a commercial for an educational product of our invention. The commercial had to be 2 minutes long, and the fictional product had to benefit student learning in some way.

Using the flip cam proved to be quite easy. At first using the camera was too easy. It took us a minute to figure out which of the three buttons turned it on. The shooting of the video went really well, was very simple. Being able to pop open the usb on the top of the camera was really convenient. The only challenge I can think of was not being able to hold the camera as steady as i would have liked.

In our imovie we used multiple features. We used the title maker feature to make our title transitions; when the voice over said the price, we were able to put the price up on the screen. We also used different kinds of transitions, we used the page curl transition, circle close, and crossfade in addition to others. We used some video effects, like vignette and slow motion as well as speeding up the video. The video effects panel was nice, we were able to modify the exposure on some portions of the video that were too dark. We were also able to use the audio controls panel to modify the volume of the voice over and background music so both could be heard clearly.

If I were to do it again, I would play with the precision control panel a little more and really perfect the timing of the music, narration and video, I would also like to try more video and audio effects.

I would rate iMovie a 10+. The ease of use, and Apple's way of making a very complicated task (video editing) simple enough that a student with no editing experience can learn easily and accomplish is amazing.

I my preschool classroom I would use a flip cam in my classroom to record some of my students working, to watch it later. I would also use it to record special events and projects. I think it would also be useful to record a group of students singing a new song or listening to a new story that they and their peers can watch in small groups at a later time to either learn a new song, or reinforce a concept taught in the classroom. iMovie would be especially helpful in taking the video from the classroom and enable me to organize it in a way that makes sense, and displaying it in a way that is attractive for the students.

Week 5 - WebQuest

This week we worked with Zunal's WebQuest. WebQuest is a tool for making informational websites that people can use to study a particular subject. We did our WebQuest on the Northern Mariana Islands. We were able to make worksheets and upload them for students to use. We were also able to find resources for students to use online and post them on our WebQuest for students to use to complete their worksheets. WebQuest was extremely easy to use, and helped us very quickly design an organized website for our students to use. If I were teaching in an elementary setting, I would definitely take advantage of this tool. There were even sections where we were able to post our assessments and requirements so that students are able to see exactly what is expected and can reference to at any time. This gets a 10 from me.

Week 2 - Wordle

This week we played with Wordle. Wordle is an online tool that allows you to make word clouds. Teachers may be able to use this to make mini word walls for a subject area. They may also use it as we did in class as a culmination to an ice breaker.

We had piece of paper taped to our back, and classmates had to write words that described us on that piece of paper. We entered the words into the Wordle tool and it gave us a word cloud of words describing us. It allows you to tweak the word cloud's layout, and fonts. The results are beautiful and I am thinking up different ways to use this because the results were so attractive.

Total 10!

First Post

This is the first post, really just to test how my template looks. Its hard to see what a template looks like with no content. I might have to put another post to really test it out. I kind of like the idea of the magazine view, but with no content I don't know what that looks like.

I'm just typing to fill up space. I'm kind of hungry, I don't know what I want to eat, I think we're supposed to eat bbq tonight, don't really want bbq but whatever. I have sooooo much homework due. I can't wait until ED 401 is over. Online is cool, online accelerated, not so much. I'll be glad when its out of the way then the last half the semester will be easy peasy.

I'll see how this looks now, hopefully its long enough to tell. I'll put in some nonesense just in case. Snihuhfis suihfuiureh huhfis nushi ksbfisbiu sfuhfiuh sfuhsoruh skjs ouh s iuhi vfso uihoh s uhiuhsf kuhkiunsf kbikuhsf nkjsudfhisd iiusdf iuhfu nosueor sudfhn osidfj sifhos sufhsh sufdhs ysgfi siufh siufh siuhfsoeoijojnvosi si8efohous shfuiefhooief nhsudhfi sfnoshs oshufohns nifosuh soihflo.

That should be enough. Iuhi sounds kind of Polynesian....just saying.
